In 1846 the US went to war with Mexico over disputed territory on the Texas boarder. President James Polk wanted to push all the way to the Pacific. Mexico surrendered in 1848 and with the addition of the seized lands, the United States doubled in size. The Mexicans that were now living in the US were offered citizenship and were told their rights would be protected under the Treaty of Hildago.
